For more than a decade, Goldbelly has been helping restaurants across the United States ship regional delicacies to foodies across America. At long last, they’re now lovingly shipping those iconic American foods to Canada.
I was lucky enough to have them ship me a free sample from Biscuit Love, a small chain of restaurants based in Nashville that I visited when I was there earlier this year.
When I picked up the hefty package that arrived on my doorstep, it weighed a ton, but as I opened it up I realized that most of that weight came from four frozen gel packs that were in the box to keep the perishable ingredients cool. The food and the ice packs were further enclosed with an insulating layer and a mylar wrap to keep any moisture away from the cardboard box.
As I peeled away the insulation and removed the ice packs, I found all of the ingredients for the “Taste of Biscuit Love” Brunch Gift Box for 8. It included dough to bake their signature biscuits along with an envelope of their tasty sausage gravy and homemade jams. In addition, there were biscuit cinnamon rolls with pecan sticky bun sauce and cream cheese Icing as well as housemade vegan granola and a packet of locally-roasted coffee beans.
Even though the food is now a memory, I’ve still got a Biscuit Love mug that came with the gift box along with a tea towel on which is printed the recipe for their biscuits so I can make more whenever I want! There’s no sign of their sausage gravy recipe, so I guess they want to keep that a secret.
Biscuit Love is hardly the only restaurant teaming up with Goldbelly. You can order from a long list of mouth-watering items from an impressive array of restaurants, some run by famous chefs like Daniel Boulud and the mayor of Flavortown himself, Guy Fieri, as well as many lesser-known regional gems like Biscuit Love or the legendary Commander’s Palace in New Orleans. Some items are part of easy-to-prepare meal kits like my brunch kit while others are ready to eat.
If I had any criticism of the service, it has to be around sustainability. The idea of shipping a pie from one side of the continent to the other doesn’t sound very environmentally friendly and then there’s the amount of packaging to keep something cold while shipping it those long distances, but the same could be said for a lot of other things we order online.
The food items promoted on Goldbelly would certainly make for a great gift for that hard-to-buy for person in your life or simply be a good way for you to re-live your favourite flavours from your last American road trip.
